BTS And Coldplay’s ‘My Universe’ Outsold The Rest Of The Top 10 Bestselling Songs In The U.S. Combined - Forbes

It’s never surprising to see BTS’s name appear at the top of Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart, the ranking of the tunes that actually sold the most copies in the U.S. every week. The band has demonstrated many, many times over that they can rack up massive sales frames like almost nobody else in the business these days. The South Korean favorites return to the summit on the purchase-only roster this week with “My Universe,” their collaboration with British rock outfit Coldplay. The joint effort was so successful in its first full frame of availability, it doesn’t just start at No. 1, it outperforms every other release by an enormous margin.

“My Universe” launches at No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart with nearly 92,500 copies sold via download stores. The smash also managed tens of thousands more via physical editions, as the tune opens atop the Hot 100 with 127,000 copies sold across all formats.

BTS’s latest winner on the Digital Song Sales chart sold so well as it arrived, no other track stood a chance. This week, the collaborative cut outsold all of the rest of the songs inside the top 10 on the ranking combined. That grouping includes hit songs from the likes of Walker Hayes (“Fancy Like,” No. 3), Elton John and Dua Lipa (“Cold Heart,” No. 4), Ed Sheeran (“Shivers,” No. 5) and even another one of the South Korean band’s latest successes.

As “My Universe” starts at No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart, the track replaces BTS’s own “Butter” in first place. That bestseller drops one rung to No. 2, giving the act control over the highest two spaces once again. That’s a feat that is almost only accomplished by the most successful artists in the American music industry, and it’s one that BTS have managed several times before. This frame, “My Universe” outsold “Butter” more than four times over, as the runner-up cut sold another 22,500 digital copies in the past tracking frame.

Taking into consideration all forms of purchasing, “My Universe” scores one of the largest sales frames of 2021, coming in behind only BTS’s other major hits. “Butter” managed to sell at least 100,000 copies in eight different weeks, easily making it the bestselling title of the year. The song of the summer arrived with just under a quarter of a million copies sold, a nearly unheard of sum in today’s all-streaming business. Follow-up single “Permission to Dance” entered the race with more than 140,000 copies purchased.
