SQUID GAME follows a group of contestants as they battle it out across a series of bizarre challenges. It was revealed the old man, or 001, created the games – here’s why.
Squid Game is one of the most unique series on Netflix. Not only this, but it is now the most popular show the platform has ever created. As such, social media is a buzz about the show, with fans seeking answers about every aspect surrounding it. One topic of debate is why the games were created in the first place.
Throughout Squid Game, one of the main mysteries of the series is who is behind the games in the first place.
While the majority of the show focuses on Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) as he navigates the games, undercover cop Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon) seeks to find the answers.
The first cryptic tease comes in episode five, when Jun-ho finds a file of all the contestants in the game.
001 or Oh Il-man (Oh Yeong-su), the old man who cunningly survives most of the games is suspiciously missed out of the archives.
Clearly foreshadowing the reveal, it only comes near the end of the show when Il-nam is revealed to be behind all the events of the show.
He, with the help of other wealthy elite, set up the Squid Games decades ago.
001 set up the games because he and many of his rich friends were bored, no longer able to enjoy life as their wealth made their days too easy.
Il-nam decided to take part in the 2020 games as a way to recapture his youth, seeking a thrilling end to a meaningless life.
One user on Reddit took issue with the surprise twist, explaining that 001’s reasoning was flawed to begin with.
User Ackwelll wrote: “I loved the show but hated the old man’s reasoning for it.
“How about ‘be the change you want to see in the world’ instead of lying on your deathbed looking out towards a dying homeless man gambling if anyone is going to help him or not?
“You say that they’re not exactly forcing the players to play, but really they pretty much are. That’s why they are deliberately picking players that are out of options because they know they have to play.
