WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, News And Notes As Roman Reigns Beats Rey Mysterio - Forbes

WWE SmackDown advertised the WWE Hell in a Cell main event early with Roman Reigns vs. Rey Mysterio for the WWE Universal Championship. The Hell in a Cell match is reportedly expected to take up the majority of the second hour, and as of this writing there has been no concrete reason given for the sudden re-scheduling.

The short-notice match was announced via social media after a tense exchange between Reigns and Mysterio on Twitter.

With Roman Reigns one of the most dominant world champions in years, and Rey Mysterio as the ultimate underdog, there is no buying Mysterio toppling Reigns for the WWE Universal Championship. The star power of such a marquee match inside Hell in a Cell, however, could translate to viewership success though this was not the case the last time Reigns defended the Universal Championship against Daniel Bryan.

As if it needed any more last-minute surprises, hours before going live it was reported that WWE NXT champion Karrion Kross was backstage.

Last week’s broadcast of SmackDown drew its best numbers in over a month with 1.944 million viewers.

Roman Reigns and Rey Mysterio Face Off

Michael Cole adamantly promoted this match as the first Hell in a Cell in network television.

Rey Mysterio prepared to battle the Universal champion inside Hell in a Cell later tonight, and in full gear he says “every parent understands what I’m going through...”

This opening segment seemed redundant and did nothing to convince anybody Rey Mysterio has a chance in this main event.

Apollo Crews and Commander Azeez def. Kevin Owens and Big E

Sami Zayn was just like a young Jim Ross on commentary in that he spent much of his time criticizing the officiating.

Commander Azeez didn’t have the smoothest offense, but I was pleasantly surprised at the amount he was trusted to do.

I loved Commander Azeez wresting in his full uniform.

Shinsuke Nakamura def. Baron Corbin in a Battle for the Crown

Pat McAfee had the most timely reference to that viral suplexing video following a Baron Corbin belly-to-back suplex.

After two years of having to do the King Corbin gimmick, losing that crown kind of feels like an upgrade.

In the time it took to complete this five-match series, WWE could have just held a King of the Ring tournament.

Bianca Belair Challenges Bayley to Hell in a Cell

The storytelling that Bayley laughing at Bianca led to a Hell in a Cell challenge, is simply ridiculous.

Bianca Belair did a good job delivering the otherwise hackneyed material she was presented with, but why is she the one who seems obsessed with challenging Bayley if she’s the champion and has already beaten Bayley?

Otis and Chad Gable Attack Angelo Dawkins

Otis looked to have an even cleaner shave than he did last week, which was doubly depressing.

Angelo Dawkins couldn’t have made it clearer that he was suffering from a lingering injury, the way he sold, and drew sympathy for his shoulder injury before the match even began, I thought he was Ben Roethlisberger.

This “machine” version of Otis just ain’t it.

Roman Reigns def. Rey Mysterio—Hell in a Cell for the WWE Universal Championship

In a complete surprise, Rey Mysterio dominated the first half of this match. I don’t think Roman Reigns has sold for anybody the way he sold for Rey Mysterio, and it was all credited to the Father’s Day spirit.

The more WWE used “Father’s Day” to tell this story, the more you knew there wouldn’t be a happy ending.

Rey Mysterio being power bombed into the cell was made even better by Paul Heyman screaming “oh my God!”

Adblock test (Why?)
