A Seoul court on Sept. 10 found B.I, former member of K-pop boy band iKON, guilty of using and buying illegal drugs, and gave him a suspended sentence.
In a ruling, the Seoul Central District Court sentenced B.I (real name Kim Hanbin), 24, to three years in prison suspended for four years on drug charges in violation of Korea’s Narcotics Control Act.
He was also ordered to do 80 hours of community service, attend 40 hours of drug treatment lectures and pay a fine of 1.5 million won ($1,283).
Prosecutors earlier asked the court to sentence B.I to three years in prison for smoking marijuana and buying LSD.
“The accused smoked marijuana three times and bought eight LSD sheets. It cannot be regarded as a crime out of simple curiosity,” the court said, according to Korean media.
The court added that B.I “admitted to all the crimes during the trial. We convicted him based on his confession and relevant evidence from the investigation process.”
In sentencing B.I, the court also gave weight on the fact that he reflected on his crime, he is a first-time offender, his parents promised to guide him and that he maintained good social ties.
After the sentencing, B.I told the media outside the courthouse, “I will live with reflection and become a person who can be forgiven by those who have been hurt because of me. I bow my head and apologize.”
B.I was found guilty for buying and using the drugs in March and April 2016 from Han Seo-hee. B.I was indicted without detention last May for the charges.
In June 2019, B.I left iKON after a Korean entertainment news site published a report about KakaoTalk messages between him and a drug dealer.
On Sept. 17, 2019, he was questioned by the Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police Agency for 14 hours on the drug allegations. At the time, Korean media outlets reported that B.I admitted some of the charges that prompted the police to change his status from being a witness to a suspect.
