The Matrix Resurrections' Yahya Abdul-Mateen II confirms his role as Morpheus - digitalspy.com

After a huge amount of speculation, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has confirmed that he is indeed playing Morpheus in The Matrix Resurrections.

The much-anticipated trailer for the fourth outing in the franchise debuted this week, showcasing the returns of Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss).

In it, Neo – aka Thomas Anderson – appears to not remember the events of the original trilogy, with he and Trinity not even recognising each other.

Before long, he runs into Abdul-Mateen II's character, who very much appears to be a young Morpheus, giving Neo the red pill and even fighting him in a dojo, like in the original movie.

The actor has now confirmed the rumours, posting a (very, very cool) picture of his character on Instagram accompanied by the caption: "MORPHEUS."

It comes after original actor Laurence Fishburne confirmed that he hadn't been asked to reprise his character in Resurrections.

"I am not in the next Matrix movie and you'd have to ask Lana Wachowski why, 'cos I don't have an answer for that," he said earlier this year.

Last year, he told Vulture that he had "not been invited", adding: "Maybe that will make me write another play. I wish them well. I hope it's great."

Further reflecting on playing Morpheus, Fishburne said: "It is probably the role that I'll be best remembered for, which is great; it's not the only thing I'll be remembered for, which is better.

"What I get with him is I've got Darth Vader in this hand, and I've got Obi-Wan in that hand. I've got Bruce Lee, I've got Muhammad Ali shuffled in there, and I've got kung fu."

Resurrections is also bringing back Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, with new additions including Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Christina Ricci and Jessica Yu Li Henwick.

The Matrix 4 is scheduled for release on December 22, 2021 in cinemas and on HBO Max in the US.
