The dance competition TV show “Street Woman Fighter” has issued an apology after being called out by Muslims over the use of a call to prayer.
On Twitter, Muslims used the hashtag #Mnetapologize to demand Mnet, which airs the show, to apologize for using adhan on the show.
“#Mnetapologize this is not a joke. ADHAN IS NOT A SONG. @MnetKR please apologize to all Muslim not the sound RESPECT our RELIGION,” one Twitter user posted.
Another wrote, “Please respect our religion. Delete the video and change the music @MnetKR #Mnetapologize.”
“From the public to the intimate the Islamic call to prayer, adhan, literally meaning ‘announcement,’ pervades Muslim culture. It can be heard up to five times a day in Muslim communities, once for each of the five daily prayers. Often broadcast from the minarets of mosques and through media, there is also a tradition of reciting adhan into the ear of a newborn,” according to Smithsonian Folkways Magazine.
“Street Woman Fighter” is a female dance crew competition hosted by Kang Daniel with BoA and NCT’s Taeyong as judges.
On Instagram, Mnet apologized, saying, “On behalf of the Mnet Street Woman Fighter production team we offer a sincere apology regarding the soundtrack used in the opening of the first episode of Street Woman Fighter.”
“The song is an electronic soundtrack that is officially registered on the official streaming site. The production team thought that the electronic sound of the song was suitable as the background music of the program,” it added.
Mnet added, “We certainly did not hold any other intentions. We sincerely apologize for the unintended inconvenience caused by the possibility of recalling a specific rhyme. Respecting your criticism, the video will be re-uploaded after replacing the background music. Mnet will continue to listen to the opinions of the viewers around the world. We appreciate your interest in Mnet Street Woman Fighter.”
