A new Godzilla vs. Kong trailer makes King Kong the underdog in his fight against Gojira. The fourth film in Legendary and Warner Bros.' MonsterVerse is rapidly approaching. After giving Godzilla two solo films and Kong one solo outing, the two Toho creatures are meeting once again for an epic clash. Godzilla vs. Kong will continue the larger narrative of the MonsterVerse, but most audiences are excited for the movie just to see how the monster fights play out.
The marketing for Godzilla vs. Kong kicked off just a few weeks ago with the launch of the film's first trailer. The highly anticipated first look footage featured plenty of the action fans expected. But, one element that did seem to surprise viewers was how favorably it showed Kong. For Godzilla vs. Kong being a versus film, Kong was the one who seemed to have the upper hand based on the footage. This has started to change as more footage was released, with some of the latest showing Godzilla land a huge hit on Kong. Now, the pro-Godzilla footage is starting to stack up with the latest TV spot.
Legendary and Warner Bros. released a new Godzilla vs. Kong trailer today that includes several new shots from the upcoming blockbuster, which will be released in theaters and on HBO Max at the end of March. Most of the new footage shows Kong as the underdog in the fights against Godzilla, as he's shown seemingly defeated or on his heels several times.
The new Godzilla vs. Kong footage almost immediately puts Kong in a difficult position. Godzilla smashes the boat he is on and causes it to start to flip upside down. Fans already pointed out that Kong battling Godzilla on a boat wasn't a great setting for the giant ape since he likely can't swim. Kong is shown going underwater here, and while he must escape to continue the fight, this is an early sign that he might be in over his head. Kong is later shown motionless in a wrecked city setting with Monarch agents around him. Other moments of new footage include Godzilla pushing Kong into a building and other small segments of action.
Since the first Godzilla vs. Kong trailer leaned more in Kong's favor, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the marketing campaign is shifting the focus a bit. Unless Godzilla really is the villain of the movie, the trailers should give an equal balance to Kong and Godzilla's strengths. Even if there is an expectation that they'll work together at some point in Godzilla vs. Kong, the marketing needs to sell the monster brawls. So far, that has been the focal point of the trailers and that isn't likely to change anytime soon.
