A new featurette for Zack Snyder's Justice League reveals how the additional Knightmare scene was filmed. The four-hour cut that reveals the filmmaker's full vision for the movie is now available to stream on HBO Max. While most of it was already filmed during the project's principal photography several years ago, Snyder and some cast and crew returned on set to shoot the additional alternate timeline sequence at the end of the project.
Launching the DCEU in 2013 via Man of Steel, Snyder was integral in the early years of the film series, following his debut film with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice which set the stage for Justice League. However, although his movies were box office hits, they proved to be divisive, causing Warner Bros. to become more involved in the creative side of the franchise. Couple that with the tragedy that struck the director's family in 2017, and he decided to walk away from the movie. This paved the way for Joss Whedon to not just finish what he started but assemble a significantly different cut of his story. Shortly after, the Release the Snyder Cut movement was born, and after three years since the ensemble feature hit theaters, Zack Snyder's Justice League is finally here.
Now, a new featurette from the official Zack Snyder's Justice League has been released, offering fans an idea of how the project came to be. The most interesting bit from it, however, was seeing them work on the Knightmare sequence in the movie, which featured the return of Jared Leto's Joker. Watch the clip below:
Before Snyder left Justice League, he was finished with principal photography for the movie, which means that all scenes have been shot, leaving room for the traditional reshoot schedule in case they needed to change or add something. Warner Bros. and Whedon could've simply picked it up from there and finished what the original director started, but as seen in the Snyder Cut, there were a lot of elements from his version that ended up on the cutting room floor. Years later, this made it easier for Snyder to finish the HBO Max project, especially at the height of the coronavirus, as most of the scenes only needed to be polished with VFX and the film's score. One of the only things he added was the aforementioned Knightmare sequence which essentially sets up the scrapped Justice League sequels.
As it is, there are no plans for any additional films from Snyder's version of the DCEU. The director maintains that the studio is not interested in it and to be fair, he has other projects lined up. But if there's any lesson learned from the Release the Snyder Cut movement, it's that's anything is possible if there's enough clamor for it. So while Zack Snyder's Justice League is officially the end of the line for the director in the DC superhero franchise, he could ultimately return for more.
