Thundercat Wins Best Progressive R&B Album at 2021 Grammys
Thundercat has won the award for Best Progressive R&B Album at the 2021 Grammy Awards. His 2020 LP It Is What It Is beat out albums by Robert Glasper (Fuck Yo Feelings), Jhené Aiko (Chilombo), Free Nationals (Free Nationals), and Chloe x Halle (Ungodly Hour). He gave an acceptance speech where he pulled Flying Lotus into the frame for a hug and shouted out the late Mac Miller and Austin Peralta.
In the press room, Thundercat reflected on winning a Progressive R&B Grammy: “Do I feel like I make progressive R&B?… I guess if that’s what you would call it, I guess that’s what you would call it. I just make music and I always hope that it would be good music.”
In 2015, Thundercat took home his first Grammy for his Kendrick Lamar collab, To Pimp a Butterfly’s “These Walls,” which was awarded the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration trophy. Tonight’s win marks his first Grammy for his own album. Producer Flying Lotus was nominated for Producer of the Year for his work on Thundercat’s album; that Grammy ended up going to Andrew Watt.
It Is What It Is came out last spring, marking the follow-up to Thundercat’s 2017 LP Drunk. The new record features contributions from Childish Gambino, Lil B, Kamasi Washington, Ty Dolla $ign, BADBADNOTGOOD, and more.
