BTS Tie Taylor Swift And Mariah Carey For The Fourth-Most No. 1 Hot 100 Debuts Of All Time - Forbes

BTS are back at No. 1 on the Hot 100 less than half a year after they last controlled the all-genre ranking of the most popular songs in the U.S., and they’ve collected their latest leader with yet another immediate ruler. The band’s new single “Butter” opens in first place on the tally, and with one more instant champion, the seven-meber band has made history yet again.

With three No. 1 debuts on the Hot 100, BTS tie just as many other superstars for the fourth-most quick chart-toppers in the ranking’s decades-long tenure. At the moment, the South Korean powerhouse act is on the same level as Taylor Swift, Mariah Carey and Travis Scott, all of whom have also seen a trio of tunes begin their time on the chart at No. 1.

BTS scored their first No. 1 debut in mid-2020, when “Dynamite” opened in first place, giving the group their historic first chart-topping start. The tune held on for three non-consecutive weeks, and it helped them become the first South Korean act to ever rule over the tally. Before that year ended, they repeated their success with “Life Goes On,” which also opened in first place, which was even more impressive considering the fact it’s performed almost entirely in Korean.

Carey was the first singer to score three No. 1 debuts on the Hot 100, as her smashes "Fantasy," "One Sweet Day" with Boyz II Men and "Honey" all started atop the list. More recently, Taylor Swift and Travis Scott matched her showing, with three No. 1 starts each. Swift’s cuts "Shake It Off," "Cardigan" and "Willow" all began as high as a cut can climb, while Scott’s "Highest in the Room," "The Scotts" with Kid Cudi (as The Scotts) and "Franchise" with Young Thug and M.I.A., all launched in the peak position.

Ariana Grande leads the way among all artists when looking at who has debuted the most songs at No. 1. The pop singer has now scored five chart-topping launches ("Thank U, Next," "7 Rings," "Stuck With U" with Justin Bieber, "Rain On Me" with Lady Gaga and “Positions”). Coming in behind her with four instant champions is Drake ("God's Plan," "Nice for What," "Toosie Slide" and "What's Next").

“Butter” is BTS’s third No. 1 debut on the Hot 100 and their fourth leader, which means that 75% of all their chart rulers have started in first place. The band joined Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo on "Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)," which bolted to the throne after the K-pop titans were credited as well.
