BTS are back at No. 1 on the just-published Hot 100, Billboard’s weekly ranking of the most-consumed songs in the U.S., taking into account sales, streams and radio play. The South Korean seven-member vocal act debuts their latest release “Butter” atop the competitive tally with ease, thanks to an impressive streaming sum and the largest one-week sales count of 2021.
With another No. 1 smash to their credit, BTS tie one of the biggest solo pop stars in the world for the most champions on the Hot 100 so far this decade.
Both BTS and Ariana Grande have now landed the most No. 1s on the Hot 10 this decade, as the two have sent four different tunes to the summit in the ‘20s. The K-pop musicians match the pop singer, as she scored her fourth leader just a few weeks back.
“Butter” follows in the footsteps of two other BTS-led singles that similarly managed to debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100, and the band also rose to the peak position by hooping on a remixed version of a tune that seemed headed for the top spot. The group scored their first chart controller last summer with “Dynamite,” which also opened in first place. Just a few weeks after they made history by becoming the first South Korean musical act to lead the charge, they returned to the summit alongside Jawsh 685 and Jason Derulo on the newly-revamped "Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)." Before 2020 ended, they started their own “Life Goes On” at No. 1 as well.
Grande’s four No. 1 hits have come to her via a number of highly publicized collaborations as well as one solo smash that had no trouble conquering the Hot 100. Last year, she joined Justin Bieber on “Stuck with U,” a coronavirus fundraiser which debuted atop the chart. Not long after that win, she and Lady Gaga sent “Rain on Me” to the throne as well. The singer’s own “Positions,” the lead single and title track from her latest album, also began its time on the ranking at No. 1.
Just a few weeks back, Grande returned to No. 1 on the Hot 100 alongside The Weeknd on their joint tune “Save Your Tears,” which bolted to the summit after the R&B/pop superstar re-released it with her on board. That track became her fifth champion, though her first No. 1 on the chart came to her at the end of the previous decade.
Currently, there are no musicians who have charted exactly three No. 1 hits in the 2020s, though there will be eventually. At least 10 artists, such as Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, Drake and Travis Scott, have all surged to the top spot twice this decade, and at least one of them is bound to land another winner sometime soon.
