BTS’s ‘Butter’ Ties As The Fifth-Longest-Charting Song By A Korean Act In Hot 100 History - Forbes

The race for the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 this week was closer than it has been in a while, as Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow made a serious play to debut their collaboration “Industry Baby” atop the all-encompassing list of the most-consumed songs in the U.S. The pair miss out by just one rung, losing the battle to BTS’s unstoppable “Butter,” which so far in its successful run at No. 1 has only relented to make room for another track by the same band. 

As “Butter” earns another stay in the Hot 100’s penthouse, the tune becomes the longest-running leader of 2021 and helps BTS break out of a tie with Olivia Rodrigo for the most weeks spent in first place on the tally so far this year, but the track itself also hits an important milestone. The summer smash has now been present on the ranking for 10 weeks, which remains a very rare accomplishment for any piece of music pushed by a musical act from South Korea.

In fact, “Butter” is one of only six songs by South Korean musicians to spend 10 weeks (or more) on the Hot 100, and by reaching double-digit frames on the list, the cut ties with another track from the same septet and earns the honor of being one of the fifth-longest-charting releases by an act from that part of the world.

With 10 weeks spent on the Hot 100 already, “Butter” is now tied with fellow BTS hit “Mic Drop,” which also spent 10 turns on the tally before falling off. That track, a collaboration with rapper Desiigner, was a major win for the band, as it was a rare top 40 hit among South Korean artists when it peaked at No. 28 back in 2017.

BTS also claim the longest-charting song among productions released by South Korean musicians, as their disco-leaning track “Dynamite” broke the all-time record last year when the No. 1 smash reached 32 weeks on the tally. That topped the previous best showing by K-pop acts by a single frame, as Psy’s “Gangnam Style” once lived on the Hot 100 for 31 periods.

At present, Pinkfong’s viral sensation “Baby Shark” remains the third-longest-charting Hot 100 hit by a South Korean musical act of any kind (Pinkfong is kind of a band/brand hybrid), with 20 weeks spent on the list. Another Psy tune, “Gentleman,” spent 15 frames on the roster before disappearing.

Seeing as “Butter” is still running the show on the Hot 100, there’s no telling how much longer it will find space on the chart. The cut will probably continue to rule, and then its decline may be slow. Billboard has a rule in place that will likely remove it from the tally should it fall below No. 50 (after spending 20 weeks on the list), but before it reaches that point, it could easily rewrite this ranking several more times.
