Last week, BTS ruled over the Hot 100 for their tenth frame this year as “Butter” continued its winning streak. Just a short time ago, Billboard announced that the South Korean boy group had finally been replaced atop the most competitive and important songs ranking in the U.S., and one of the musicians attached to the current chart-topper has now matched the K-pop titans and another one of the most popular artists in the world right now for the most champions on the ranking so far this year.
This week’s Hot 100 is ruled by the single “Stay,” a collaboration between Australian singer-songwriter The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber. The tune is the first ruler for Laroi, while Bieber has now controlled the list of the most consumed songs in the largest music market in the world with eight different smashes throughout his career. With one more leader, the Canadian star ties both BTS and Olivia Rodrigo for the most No. 1s thus far in 2021.
Bieber collects his second Hot 100 No. 1 this year with “Stay,” which jumps to the summit on the ranking just a few months after the superstar collected his seventh ruler. Back in April, Bieber debuted his single “Peaches,” which credits both Giveon and Daniel Caesar as featured acts, atop the tally.
Rodrigo became the first musician to hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 more than once in 2021, and among the three artists who have managed to score several leaders this year, she was also the first to rise to the peak. The teen performer debuted her first proper single “Drivers License” ahead of all others back in January, landing the third No. 1 of the year. The tune continued to steer the ship for eight weeks before beginning its descent. Around the time of the release of her album Sour, Rodrigo collected a second chart-topper with “Good 4 U,” which also began its time on the roster as high as possible.
BTS scored their two No. 1 hits in rapid succession, certainly much faster than either Rodrigo or Bieber. The South Korean septet debuted their summer-ready tune “Butter” atop the chart in early June, and it ended up ruling for nine nonconsecutive frames. The only track that broke up its incredible run atop the tally was the same act’s “Permission to Dance,” which started at No. 1 and only managed a single turn in first place before swapping spots with “Butter” once again.
With months left to go before 2022 arrives, BTS, Rodrigo and Bieber could be joined in this exclusive club of artists who have hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 several times, or it’s possible that one of them will collect a third ruler. That feat certainly wouldn’t be unheard of, as BTS reached the chart’s summit three times in 2020, and they could absolutely do so again.
