In the U.S., BTS debut their new single “Butter” at No. 1 on the Hot 100, which means that last week’s champion, Olivia Rodrigo’s “Good 4 U,” is forced to second place. North of America in Canada, the same thing doesn’t happen, which is frustrating for the seven-member band and their legion of fans.
BTS’s “Butter” enters the Canadian Hot 100 this frame at No. 2, failing to dethrone “Good 4 U,” which holds onto the highest rung for a second consecutive turn. It’s always a bummer for any musical act when they miss out on hitting No. 1 by just one space, but it’s particularly upsetting for the K-pop powerhouses, as they nearly landed their first chart-topper in the nation...only to tie a peak they’ve previously reached.
“Butter” is BTS’s second song to stall at No. 2 on the Canadian Hot 100, and while the band surely would have loved to rise to the penthouse for the first time, the new single still helps the band make history.
With their latest placement on the Canadian Hot 100, BTS tie their own record for the second-highest-charting song by a South Korean musical act. Last year, the septet saw their track “Dynamite” lift to No. 2, which at the time was a new high for them.
Only one song by a musician hailing from South Korea has performed better on the Canadian Hot 100, and his record has now stood for nearly a decade. Psy’s “Gangnam Style” still holds as the only release by an artist from that part of the world to hit No. 1 in Canada, despite tough competition for the throne by BTS.
In addition to tying their own record for the best showing on the Canadian Hot 100 and the second-highest-charting track by a South Korean act, “Butter” also becomes BTS’s fifth top 10 hit in Canada. They were already beating every other musician and group from their home country when looking at the most appearances inside the area, but with one more win to their credit, they further their lead.
