Only a handful of the most successful musicians have debuted a song at No. 1 on the Hot 100, Billboard’s weekly ranking of the most popular tracks in the U.S., and even fewer have managed to do so more than once. That group slims down even further when looking solely at those who have seen at least two cuts open in first place on the most competitive tally in the largest music market in the world in the same year.
Now, for the first time, one act has accomplished that latter incredible feat twice, starting a pair of singles atop the Hot 100 in two different years.
BTS score their fifth career Hot 100 No. 1 this week with “Permission to Dance,” which right now appears to be a standalone single. The tune was released alongside current smash “Butter” (which is replaced atop the ranking by the new winner) on a physical CD, and it’s actually a B-side, albeit an incredibly successful one. The track is BTS’s fourth instant champion on the most important songs ranking in the U.S., and with one more ruler, the South Korean heroes do what nobody before them has been able to.
The septet is now the first musical act of any kind in U.S. history to score several Hot 100 No. 1 debuts in more than one year. In 2020, they band reached the summit for the first time, and they ended up doing so with three tracks in just a few months. A pair of those tunes opened atop the weekly list, which showed that they were on an incredible and historic winning streak. The group’s “Dynamite” started off as high as a title can climb, and then just weeks before 2021 arrived, they repeated their success with the Korean-language single “Life Goes On.”
Less than two months ago, BTS collected their fourth Hot 100 No. 1 and third instant champion with “Butter,” which ruled the chart until this week, as the septet replace themselves all the way at the top of the ranking.
A number of well-known acts have collected more than one Hot 100 No. 1 debut, and a handful have even managed to do so in the same year, but before this week, none had done so twice. Mariah Carey, Drake, Travis Scott, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo have all scored several immediate champions on the list in a single calendar year, but only in one calendar year...though as more and more tracks arrive at No. 1, that may change at any point.
