BTS’s ‘Butter’ Is Just The Third Song By A Korean Musical Act To Hit Billboard’s Radio Chart - Forbes

BTS’s “Butter” is all over the Billboard charts this week, making history on almost every ranking it reaches. The tune is an instant champion on both the Hot 100 and Digital Song Sales rosters, and it is already one of the best-performing tracks by a South Korean musical act on the pop radio list. Thanks to quick adoption by many DJs and programmers all around the country, the tune appears on the all-genre radio chart this week, and simply by landing on the tally at all, it has become another important win for the band.

On this week's Radio Songs chart, the Billboard ranking that lists in order the tracks that reach the largest audience on radio stations across the U.S., “Butter” opens at No. 39. That’s a lofty beginning for any track, and BTS lands the only debut on the 50-rung tally this time around.

“Butter” now stands as just the third-ever appearance by a South Korean musical act of any kind on the Radio Songs chart, which is a little surprising...though these are still early days for artists from that part of the world being accepted by industry gatekeepers (and thankfully things are changing for the better all the time).

Psy scored the first hit on the Radio Songs chart among South Korean musicians almost a decade ago when his breakout smash “Gangnam Style” first appeared on the list. The tune eventually climbed all the way to No. 12, missing out on becoming the first top 10 win by just two spaces. That catchy cut held as the highest-charting (and for a long, long time, only placement) by a K-pop act until last year.

In 2020, BTS’s “Dynamite” became not just another hit for South Korean musicians on the Radio Songs chart, but the biggest hit yet. The tune worked its way up to No. 5, earning the title of the highest-charting tune and first top 10 by a musical act from the Asian territory.

“Butter” is just getting started when it comes to radio promotion, and there is every reason to believe it will continue to climb in the coming weeks. The track debuted on both the Pop Airplay and Adult Pop Airplay charts last period after just three days of activity, which was a surefire sign the cut was headed for truly great things. Now that it has enjoyed at least a full seven days in which to rack up plays on dozens of stations, the earworm rises on both of those lists, making history in other ways.
