WWE TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs is almost upon us, and SmackDown delivered in making the event must-see.

The story of Kevin Owens, Roman Reigns and Jey Uso dominated and bookended Friday night’s show, which kicked off with KO calling out the Tribal Chief.

He noted he warned his family not to watch what he’ll do to his opponent on Sunday, branding Roman a hypocrite and a bad example to his own kids.

Paul Heyman appeared on the titan tron, branding Owens a masochist for still standing up to the Undisputed Champion even after last week’s beating, but the challenger stopped listened and went on the hunt.

Adam Pearce tried to tell him to wait till Sunday, as he caught Reigns on a monitor making his way to the ring, where he demanded an apology and to be acknowledged as head of the table.

Owens headed back to the ring before Jey attacked him from behind with officials quickly breaking it up, and attacked him again in the trainer’s room with a chair shot and sending him through a table.

This continued throughout the night with Uso taking it to KO backstage, and at the end of the show Roman looked delighted as he made his way back to the end ring.

He asked Heyman why anyone would waste an opportunity to take him on for the title, but Owens appeared yet again and took a two-on-one assault, including more chair shots and getting sent through two tables.

The two cousins buried Kevin under the tables and ladders while he got rained on with yet more chair shots, and Kayla Braxton tried to grab a word with Roman as he went backstage.

However, Owens got up from the rubble and insisted he will win the title this weekend or die trying.

Best of the rest

In the opening match, Montez Ford rolled up Robert Roode with a handful of tights to sneak a win as Street Profits retained the tag team titles in a fine match, albeit a similar one to their previous meetings.

Dolph Ziggler and his partner berated Charles Robinson for not spotting the cheap victory, but the ref threatened to suspend them both and they backed down.

The decision to split up the IIconics continues to be a baffling one, as Billie Kay and surprise partner Tamina lost to the Riott Squad in a very short match.

Carmella continued to shine as she blasted a ‘sad and desperate’ champion Sasha Banks, who eventually heard enough and threw champagne in her challenger’s face.

However, Carmella gained the upper hand with the help of her sommelier, and smashed another bottle over the Legit Boss’ back.

Otis beat Shinsuke Nakamura – it’s been quite the fall from grace for the latter – with Chad Gable almost got him the win by stopping him from hitting the Caterpillar in favour of a suplex.

He told him to remember his Alpha Academy training after the bell, and to do what his mentor means, not what he says.

We also saw Sami Zayn debut the first ever Sami Awards, at one point yelling at a staff member who didn’t polish his trophies, and storming off to sort it himself – only for Big E to sneak in, cheerfully looking at the gongs and cue cards.

The IC Champion came out to host the ceremony, giving himself Comeback of the Year and Match of the Year for his victorious ladder match over AJ Styles and Jeff Hardy at Clash of Champions.

However, Big E had swapped his cards for Superstar of the Year, and the former New Day star made a hilarious victory speech before coming out on top in a subsequent scrap.

Elsewhere, Bayley and Bianca Belair both spoke about their match during the show, and put on a really good clash even with a couple of missteps.

In the end, the Role Model stole the win, raking the eyes and hitting the Rose Plant – but one can’t help but think the EST of WWE should have won here.
