As SEVENTEEN's performance unit leader, HOSHI knows how to put on a show. So of course the CARATs are excited to see that he’s stepping out on his own.Fresh off of the band's best-selling special album, ; [Semicolon], HOSHI is getting ready for his next step as a solo artist: his first mixtape. "Spider" has been getting fans excited ever since it was first announced on March 26 with the first teaser getting over 1.5 million views in 24 hours. Not only does it show the power of the CARATs and SEVENTEEN as a band, but how much buzz is around HOSHI as he steps into the limelight. And trust us when we say, he's totally ready for it.
Seventeen got the chance to talk to HOSHI about the creative process behind "Spider," getting to collaborate with his fellow SEVENTEEN bandmates in new ways, and having the CARATs on his side.
17: "Spider" isn't your first solo track, as CARATs have heard bits here and there particularly during SEVENTEEN concerts, but it's probably your biggest. How does it feel knowing that fans will get to hear it?
HOSHI: In times like these when it’s difficult to meet with our fans in person, it’s an amazing feeling just knowing that I’m sharing new music with our CARATs.
17: For some listeners this will be the first time they see you doing something solo. What's something you want them to keep in mind?
HOSHI: I hope our fans enjoy "Spider" and the accompanying performance for this track as well! I’m forever grateful to our CARATs for all the love and support they have shown SEVENTEEN, and I'll continue to work hard in the future.
17: You worked with fellow SEVENTEEN member WOOZI and producer BUMZU on the lyrics, with frequent SEVENTEEN collaborator Park Ki-tae joining in on composition and arrangement. How was it working with them on something solo versus something created for SEVENTEEN?
HOSHI: While SEVENTEEN’s music is focused solely on the team, I think this was a fun experience to create my own personal color as a soloist. I fully enjoyed discovering what makes me through this project.
17: Can you talk about the music video and getting to collaborate more on visuals as a solo artist?
HOSHI: I was able to take more of the creative lead as a soloist this time, and this extended to the music video for "Spider" as well. I had a specific team I wanted to work with in mind so as soon as we completed "Spider" in the studios, I personally contacted the music video director and worked with him to align our schedules. The main focus of this music video is the performance, so please look forward to it!
17: What would you say is the biggest difference between your solo work and your work with SEVENTEEN?
HOSHI: The biggest difference in terms of solo work and my work with SEVENTEEN is that there’s a bit more individual freedom and leeway as a solo artist. As a SEVENTEEN member, we all come to a decision together—whether it’s about music or the steps we should take as a group. Both are very different processes, but they are equally important to me and they each have their own appeal.
As a soloist, there are times when I’ll get confused or stumble when it comes to creating music, but the best part about working as a soloist is that I can clearly demonstrate my own unique color and musical style. On the flip side, the best part about being in SEVENTEEN is that I know I can lean on and work together with my members.
17: You’re doing so much right now with composing, performing, choreographing, etc. Is there something you haven't done yet as an artist that you're hoping to do?
HOSHI: Something I haven’t done yet as an artist that I would love to do with my SEVENTEEN members is a stadium tour.
17: What's the biggest thing you've learned as both a person and an artist in this new project?
HOSHI: All 13 of our members are well-aware of their individual strengths and how to best contribute to the team, which in turn, creates a stronger SEVENTEEN. But for me, there were times when I wasn’t sure if I was doing a good job as a member of this group. Through this mixtape, I think I’ve gained more confidence, and found a way to create a color that is wholly mine as "HOSHI the Artist."
17: What's a message you would like to send to fans as they get ready for new music?
HOSHI: I was able to get through these difficult times by creating new music for our CARATs. I worked hard on this mixtape and I hope you enjoy it!
