Where to watch: In theaters and on HBO Max

Test your might with the new live action reimagining of the popular video game. The new Mortal Kombat delivers where the other films fell short in terms of blood, guts, and gore.

Directed by newcomer Simon McQuoid, Mortal Kombat follows a mysterious, intergalactic tournament of ancient martial arts. One of the most successful video game-to-movie adaptations of all time, 2021’s imagining is more an introduction/origin story for Scorpion and his feud with Sub-Zero.

Thinking about tuning in? Here's what you need to know.

Mortal Kombat will hit theaters and HBO Max on Friday, April 23. It is part of the HBO Max same-day premiere lineup, with a simultaneous streaming and theatrical release.

I know nothing about the Mortal Kombat universe. How can I get up to speed?

Funny you say ask — Mashable senior games reporter Adam Rosenberg just put together an in-depth explainer for those new to the MK universe. In it, he covers everything from the original video game series to the ‘90s movies, to a gory web series and even a short film. You’ll be fully prepped for premiere day.

What are people saying about Mortal Kombat so far?

Rosenberg also reviewed the trailer (which you can watch here), noting: “This trailer does not keep it clean, but it does give us a first taste of the ensemble cast — including action-packed appearances from Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion and Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero — and the journey they're about to embark upon." Some highlights from other early reviews and reports:

  • "Fans of the long-running Mortal Kombat video game franchise finally have cause for celebration. After enduring numerous film adaptations that neutered the notoriously graphic violence of the games, first-time director Simon McQuoid delivers the series’ trademark “fatalities” in all their gory glory.” — James Marsh, film critic at South China Morning Post

  • "I found the experience to be hard-hitting, intriguingly shot, very well-performed, and best of all — surprisingly emotional. I have some gripes in its editing rhythms, but by and large, I found this first look to be a captivating overture, and, to borrow Shang Tsung's parlance, a promising taste of things to come." — Gregory Lawrence, associate editor at Collider

  • "What I will say is that this film takes place before the actual tournament. It’s a rallying of the troops, where the audience gets to meet the Kombatants and find out more about them. Sometimes, it does feel quite rushed as not every fighter gets a well-rounded intro, but it’s far from the overstuffed Mortal Kombat: Annihilation where characters just appeared for the sake of it.” — Sergio Pereira, writer at Fortress of Solitude
