Wednesday 21 April marks a significant milestone for the Queen, as she reaches her 95th birthday. Yet with the monarch still in the midst of a two-week royal mourning period after the death of her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, not to mention ongoing coronavirus restrictions, there will be little pomp and ceremony to celebrate the day.
The Queen will no doubt be keenly feeling the absence of Prince Philip, her husband of more than 73 years, who died on 9 April aged 99. But it will come as a welcome balm to know that the thoughts and well wishes of her, friends, family and subjects will be with her on the special day.
It has also been reported that the monarch may be joined by loved ones for a scaled-down, Covid-safe gathering. BAZAAR.com cites a royal source as stating that the Queen will likely be joined by a small group of family members to celebrate the milestone on Wednesday. Meanwhile another Palace source confirmed that no new birthday portrait of the Queen will be released, what with the royal mourning period in the wake of Philip’s death continuing until Friday.
The news comes as a Ministry of Defence spokesperson confirmed that the traditional gun salutes, which typically take place at Hyde Park and the Tower of London to commemorate the Queen’s birthday, will also not take place. It’s the second year in a row that the annual tradition has been cancelled, having been halted last year amid the start of the UK’s first national lockdown. It has also been announced that the customary Trooping the Colour celebrations, marking the monarch’s ‘official birthday’ in June, will again not take place on their usual scale, for the second year running.
Her Majesty was joined at Philip’s downscaled funeral at Windsor on Saturday by a small group of 30 mourners, including her children and grandchildren. Although she sat alone in St George’s Chapel during the service on account of social distancing restrictions, it would have been a welcome source of comfort to see her loved ones gather to pay tribute to her late husband. With the Duke of Sussex having travelled to the UK from his home in California for the event, it’s been speculated that he may remain in the country for his grandmother’s birthday this week.
BAZAAR.com adds that while the Queen will not be conducting any public official engagements in the near future, she will continue working from home at Windsor. There she will personally acknowledge messages of condolence expressed by world leaders after the Duke of Edinburgh’s death, while Prince Charles and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are also expected to respond on behalf of Clarence House and Kensington Palace.
