P1Harmony, “겁나니 (Scared)”
The instrumental opening to P1Harmony's latest sounds at least marginally like the cooking music in Breath of the Wild — and we mean that in the best, most delightful way possible. The K-pop group's new EP Disharmony: Break Out is here, and the lead single “Scared” is intense, high-energy, and mesmerizing as the rookie group slips into the zone. We're a little scared of their power, TBH. “We hope you guys love the album and music video as much as we do,” the group told Teen Vogue in a message to their fans. “We definitely poured all of our energy and effort into this album!! Please stay safe and healthy and we hope to meet you guys again.”
The Weeknd & Ariana Grande, “Save Your Tears (Remix)”
After Ariana Grande and The Weeknd shared teasers for a collab earlier this week, anticipation has been high. He brought Ari onto a remix of his recent hit “Save Your Tears,” and they're a match made in vocal heaven on the '80s power-pop track. Ari's harmonies flow throughout, and she also gets a verse of her own — we wouldn't be mad if these two did a whole album together.
Jorja Smith, “Gone”
Singer-songwriter Jorja Smith is back with a new single ahead of her forthcoming EP, Be Right Back. The song has dark, poignant energy as she muses on grief and moving on across a slowed-down beat. “Tell me what to do when the ones you love have gone missing," she sings. “Tell me how the world seems to get along without you.”
Yola, “Diamond Studded Shoes”
Yola continues to be one of the most exciting musicians to listen to right now — and on “Diamond Studded Shoes,” she further proves her genre-bending prowess. The song is an expert melding of pop, folk, soul, and country as Yola takes down the establishment with an addition to the protest song canon. (Oh, and the music video is inspired by The Truman Show.) “This song explores the false divides created to distract us from those few who are in charge of the majority of the world’s wealth and use the ‘divide and conquer’ tactic to keep it," she says of the track, off her forthcoming album Stand For Myself. "This song calls on us to unite and turn our focus to those with a stranglehold on humanity.”
Greyson Chance, “Hellboy”
Singer-songwriter Greyson Chance takes a dancier turn in the extremely fun “Hellboy,” with its disco beat and electric animated visual. The chorus has a spoken-word feel, as Greyson spits out lines like “I'm a hell boy… I might give you hell, boy.” It's easy to picture this one in a sweaty, clubby setting: “Ooh, there's a fire burning / Baby do you feel it?”
NU'EST, “INSIDE OUT”
K-pop group NU’EST is back with Romanticize, their first full-length album in seven years, and spearheading the new era is title track “INSIDE OUT.” Described as a “chill house” track, there’s no denying “INSIDE OUT” is one of the catchiest releases yet from the quintet. Before you know it, the tune will be stuck in your head and you’ll find yourself singing along to every single word of the “you are the one that I want, ay-ay-ayy, the one that I need, ay-ay-ayy” post-chorus. Come for more disco-infused, uptempo bops like “Dress” and “Black” as well as guitar-led ballads like “Don’t Wanna Go,” and stay for solos penned by each of the five members — all with love as a connecting thread.
