The Walking Dead: Every Major Character Death In The Comics - Screen Rant

The Walking Dead has never had a problem with killing major characters. From the start in the comics, major characters like Shane and Lori died, and in the comics, everyone was shocked when characters like Carl Grimes died, even though he lived in the comics. Only a few people who lived to the end, such as Carl in the comics, and Daryl Dixon will live to the end of the TV series.

Daryl Dixon never appeared in the comics, and there was not a comparable counterpart, either. That might be part of why Carl lived to the end of the comics, while Daryl will make it to the end of the main TV series. However, in the comics, some massive character deaths shocked readers.

15 Amy's Death

One of the most shocking early deaths in The Walking Dead comics was Amy. This happened on the TV show as well, as Amy's death pushed Andrea to her fate on TV and her eventual role as a hero in the comics. Amy was traveling with Andrea and Dale when they met up with the survivors. In a zombie attack on the camp, Amy ended up infected, and Andrea had to take her sister down after her death.

14 Shane's Death

Shane in The Walking Dead comic and TV show comparison

The death of Shane in the comics and the TV show were different. In the TV show, Shane lived much longer than he did in the comics. However, his death was the same in both cases. He wanted to get rid of Rick because he had fallen in love with Lori. In the TV show, Rick killed Shane, but in the comics, it was a young Carl who killed Shane to protect his dad at the end of the comics' first volume.

13 Carol's Death

Carol and Andrea basically switched places in the TV show, with Carol becoming the tough survivor on TV while that was Andrea in the comics. Carol, in the comics, was depressed and never was able to make it on her own after her abusive husband's death. In The Calm Before, Carol wanted to enter a relationship with Lori and Rick and took her own life by a zombie when Lori rejected it.

12 Tyreese's Death

Daryl was Rick's right-hand man for much of The Walking Dead TV series, but in the comics, it was Tyreese. In the TV show, Tyreese showed up but was very different. In the comics, Tyreese lost control when his daughter died in prison. In the comics, The Governor took Tyreese's head off in a scene changed to Hershel on TV.

11 Lori Grimes' Death

Lori Grimes died in both the comics and TV show at the prison. However, the manner of death was horrifically worse in the comics.

In the TV show, she died giving birth, and Carl had to finish her off. In the comics, she delivered Baby Judith, and then The Governor gunned both Lori and Baby Judith down in one of the comic's most brutal scenes.

10 Hershel's Death

In The Walking Dead TV show, Tyreese was decapitated by The Governor instead of Hershel. However, that was just a minor switch because Hershel also died at the hands of The Governor. Instead of getting decapitated, The Governor shot Hershel in the head and took his life at the prison's battle. This also led to another change, as The Governor also died when he was shot in the head.

9 Morgan's Death

Michonne and Morgan in The Walking Dead comic

Morgan not only survived The Walking Dead TV show, but he was one of the headliners of Fear of the Walking Dead. He didn't make it out of the comics alive. Morgan and Michonne had a relationship in the comics, which made his death more tragic. He died in No Way Out when The Scavengers caused his death, and Michonne had to finish him off.

8 Dale's Death

The Walking Dead Comic Dale Is Tainted Meat

Dale had been around since almost the start, but his time came to an end in Fear the Hunters. While The Hunters were the villains in this book, it was Dale who died at the end after he was bitten in the shoulder by zombies. With Dale knowing he was dying, he had the Hunters eat his "tainted meat" rather than Bob, who was in that scene on the TV show.

7 Abraham's Death

Jesus and Abraham in The Walking Dead comics

Abraham died differently in the comics and the TV show as well. On the TV show, Nurse Denise Cloyd died with an arrow to her head at a shocking moment. In the comics, Abraham took the arrow into his eye in the exact scene that saw Denise's death. In the TV show, Abraham died at Negan's hands instead.

6 Glenn's Death

Glenn died the same in The Walking Dead comics and the TV show, and in both cases, it was a shocking moment that hit fans hard.

In the TV show, Negan had everyone in a circle, and he beat Abraham to death, making fans think Glenn would be spared. However, in both cases, Negan also beat Glenn to death with the bat in front of his friends.

5 Rosita and Ezekiel's Deaths

Both The Walking Dead TV show and the comic books had the shocking moment where The Whisperers killed several survivors. The heads on the pikes were different in the two cases. In the TV show, Tara's death was the big one. However, in the comics, two major deaths shook up the world, with both King Ezekiel and a pregnant Rosita dying.

4 Father Gabriel's Death

At one time, Father Gabriel was one of the most hated survivors for fans of The Walking Dead TV show. He tried to betray them more than once, but he found a way to find redemption. In the comics, he died during the attack by Beta and the Whisperers. Gabriel ended up falling from a post and getting his feet tangled. As he hung upside down, Beta finished him off.

3 Andrea's Death

Carl, Rick and Andrea in The Walking Dead Comic

Andrea died early in the TV show, taking her own life by a zombie when The Governor betrayed her. This was how Carol died in the comics. However, in the comics, Andrea became the kick-butt warrior that Carol did in the TV show. Andrea ended up with Rick Grimes, and the two fell in love. She ended up dying in A Certain Doom thanks to Beta causing her to get bitten by zombies.

2 Dwight's Death

Dwight was one of Negan's top lieutenants and finally left him to join Rick Grimes and the survivors. When things came to an end, he took control of the Saviors and helped lead them into the new world of trading with other societies. When everyone went to the Commonwealth, Dwight didn't trust them and wanted to murder their leader, Pamela. Rick Grimes shot and killed Dwight to protect the peace.

1 Rick Grimes' Death

Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead comic

The most shocking death in The Walking Dead comics came in Rest in Peace. Rick Grimes had saved Pamela and helped keep the peace between everyone. However, while the world seemed to find peace behind those walls, Pamela's son Sebastian walked in and shot and killed Rick without warning. With Rick Grimes' death, the story came to an end, and only one comic remained, showing how Carl moved on years after his dad's death.
