The new posters for Zack Snyder's Justice League capture the movie's story, in more ways than one. The Snyder Cut's upcoming HBO Max debut was officially announced on May 20th, 2020, but other than confirmation that it would be arriving sometime in 2021, there have been few specific details on the time frame — until the Justice League Snyder Cut release date was officially confirmed for March 18, 2021, announced through a collection of posters released online by Snyder.
Snyder also captioned the three posters with the words "Fallen", "Risen" and "Reborn." What's particularly notable about the posters, and the captions that Snyder assigned to each of them, is that they sequentially give the essence of the Snyder Cut's story on two different levels. On one level, they encapsulate the essence of what is known about the story told within the Snyder Cut, and on another, they also illustrate the movie's one-of-a-kind journey to finally being released.
Relating to the story told by the film, the posters follow the story of the Knightmare future and Darkseid's conquest of Earth, with the Fallen poster depicting a shattered Justice League logo. The Risen poster represents the resurrection of Superman after his death in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, exemplified in the tattered Justice League flag similar to the image of the Man of Steel's cape associated with The Death of Superman. The Reborn poster represents the League, now including the revived Superman, forming to defend Earth against Darkseid's invasion, and standing as a force for good.
Looking at the posters on the second level, the Fallen poster is meant to represent the infamous reshoots and creative overhaul Justice League was subject to following Snyder's departure from the movie, along with its demise in theaters. The Risen poster stands for the coming release of the Snyder Cut, following an intense push by fans since the theatrical version of Justice League. The Reborn poster, depicting film canisters bearing Snyder's name, captures the augmentation process that the Snyder Cut has undergone since being greenlit, which is allowing elements that would not have been present in the film to now be re-integrated. These include Jared Leto's Joker, previously not in the movie at all and added into the film after Snyder's additional photography, along with other big elements like the OG Steppenwolf design and Superman's black suit.
This isn't the first time Snyder has presented his movie's story in symbolic terms either. Snyder previously released a T-shirt through Ink to the People depicting his five-movie DCEU plan in a coded puzzle. Given that and the social media teases Snyder made in the aftermath of Justice League's release, it isn't surprising that Snyder would continue adding layered messages in the Snyder Cut's marketing.
With the Snyder Cut landing on March 18th, the three posters have kicked off the full media blitz for a superhero film that many believed would never see the light of day. That fact alone ensures that the marketing for the movie will be as much of an anomaly as the movie itself is. What lies ahead between now and March 18th will be fascinating to see, especially after Snyder has begun the final rollout for Zack Snyder's Justice League with allegorical representations of both the movie's story and the story of the movie.
