3 Statistics That Show Just How Massive BTS’s ‘Permission To Dance’ Video Is In Korea - Forbes

BTS’s new single “Permission to Dance” is a global giant, no matter how one looks at it. In fact, the song is the No. 1 track in the world in terms of total consumption. Helping the tune debut in lofty positions all around the planet is the accompanying music video, which was historic in terms of its reach from the minute it debuted. The clip quickly earned one of the 10 largest debuts in YouTube history, and a quick look at the company’s weekly charts in the band’s home country of South Korea proves just how beloved it was in its first week of availability.

Here are three statistics that highlight how popular BTS’s “Permission to Dance” video was in South Korea in the first seven days fans could watch it.

Bigger Than The Rest Of The Top 25 Combined

The “Permission to Dance” video opens at No. 1 on the weekly ranking of the most-viewed music videos in South Korea with an impressive 9.6 million views. To put that figure into perspective, it is one of just two visuals to rack up at least one million clicks in the seven-day tracking period, and after the top two spaces, the play counts drop precipitously.

“Permission to Dance” outperformed every other title present inside the top 25, the entirety of the highest quarter on the chart, combined.

Eight Times Larger Than The Runner-Up

This week, the No. 2 most-viewed music video on YouTube in South Korea is by the same band who sits at No. 1. BTS’s “Butter” treatment jumps several spots and settles in the runner-up rung with 1.08 million views in the same tracking period in which “Permission to Dance” earned more than 9 million. The K-pop band’s latest clip outperformed their previous release more than eight times over.

More Than The Rest Of The Top Five Combined...Times Two

Looking at the highest half of the top 10, the No. 1 title still does much, much better than every other clip. Included in the top five this week on YouTube’s chart of the most-viewed music videos in South Korea are the aforementioned “Butter” as well as Lim Young-woong’s “My Starry Love” (No. 3, 894,000 views), Taeyeon’s “Weekend” (No. 4, 877,000 views) and yet another clip by BTS, as their performance of “Butter” at the FNS Music Festival opens at No. 5 with 607,000 views.

Adding all those successful videos up, the Nos. 2 through 5 most popular videos racked up 3.458 million views. When doubled, that sum still doesn't come close to hitting the 9.6 million views “Permission to Dance” scored in its first frame.
