YouTube is teaming up with BTS for a new dance challenge on YouTube Shorts.

The challenge encourages anyone who loves to dance to make a 15-second YouTube Shorts video. Of course, users are encouraged to use the BTS track “Permission to Dance” as their backing. YouTube says the Permission to Dance Challenge is an effort to bring people around the world together using its new short-form video platform.

How to Participate in the BTS Challenge – YouTube Shorts

Ready to take part in the challenge? You’ll need a smartphone and the YouTube mobile app. You can access the YouTube Shorts creation tools directly from the app. Here’s a quick guide on how to get started.

  1. Tap the “( + ) create icon” on the bottom navigation bar and select “Create a Short.
  2. Tap the “Add Music” button and select BTS’ “Permission to Dance.” The music will be queued up perfectly to 15 seconds without having to do anything else.
  3. Hold the “Capture” button (red circle) to record your YouTube Short video clip.
  4. Tap “Done” followed by “Next” to add video details. Be sure to include the hashtags #PermissiontoDance and #Shorts.
  5. Hit “Upload” when you’re happy with your edit and you’re ready to go.

How long does the YouTube Shorts BTS Challenge last?

YouTube says the ‘Permission to Dance’ challenge starts July 23 6 am PST and lasts through August 14 6 am PST. During the contest period, anyone around the world with access to the YouTube Shorts feature can participate in the challenge.

Not sure if you have access to the YouTube Shorts feature? Google has been working hard to rollout the feature to several new countries over the last few months. Digital Music News has covered the eventual rollout with a list of currently available countries.

YouTube is betting big on attracting members of the BTS Army and K-pop at large. TikTok has become the social media network of choice for the younger generation. That drives viewing eyeballs away from YouTube and Instagram.

You can tell the old guard is worried because both Google and Facebook have completely copied TikTok inside their own products. Instagram Reels have taken a front and center position for Facebook, while YouTube has BTS heartthrobs challenging their teen fans to dance for YouTube Shorts.

YouTube is also hoping to attract permanent content creators with its YouTube Creator Fund. It works similarly to TikTok’s Creator Fund – which pays users to upload viral, fresh content continually.
