BTS Become The First Group To Replace Themselves At No. 1 On The Hot 100 In Over A Decade - Forbes

It seems that every few months, BTS return to the summit on the Hot 100, Billboard’s weekly ranking of the most-consumed songs in the U.S. Now, with their latest smash, the band has quickened their pace, as they replace themselves at No. 1 on the tally with new smash “Permission to Dance,” which steps in and stops the seven-week reign of previous release “Butter.”

As they replace themselves atop the Hot 100, BTS become one of only a relatively small number of musicians who have managed the incredible feat, and they are just the fifth non-solo act to do so. Somewhat surprisingly, the South Korean superstars have now become the first group to swap one No. 1 hit for another in more than a decade.

The last time a band pushed one of their own songs to No. 1 on the Hot 100 at the same time another one of their releases was already running the show was back in 2009. The Black Eyed Peas were right in the middle of one of the most successful runs in the history of the chart when “I Gotta Feeling” replaced “Boom Boom Pow” in first place. The second ruler ended up running the show for 14 weeks, while the first of the two controlled the tally for a dozen frames, meaning the electro/pop/hip-hop outfit led the charge for an astonishing 26 weeks, or exactly half a year.

12 years have passed since the Black Eyed Peas managed their historic showing, and that stands as the second-longest stretch of time in between groups replacing themselves at No. 1 on the Hot 100. The Beatles became the first band to swap one massive hit for another at the top of the Hot 100, which they accomplished back in 1964. Three decades would pass before another non-solo musical act, Boyz II Men, would repeat that success.

In between the Black Eyed Peas and BTS’s historic moments on the Hot 100’s throne, four other musicians have replaced themselves atop the tally, with Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, Justin Bieber and Drake all trading in one No. 1 single for another.
