BTS Have Earned The Fastest Accumulation Of No. 1 Hits Since Michael Jackson More Than 30 Years Ago - Forbes

Scoring a No. 1 hit on the Hot 100 is a momentous occasion for any musician, whether they’ve reached the summit before or not. Earning more than one leader on the most competitive songs ranking in the U.S. in a year is a surefire sign that an act is truly one of the hottest in the business, and only a small number of superstars have managed to rise to the top spot more than twice in a 12-month period.

BTS collect yet another Hot 100 champion again this week, as their new release “Permission to Dance” debuts atop the ranking, bringing the South Korean musicians back to the summit for the fifth time. The band has been racking up leaders on the roster in rapid-fire succession, and their winning streak is historic in nature by this point.

The South Korean setpet has now accrued five Hot 100 No. 1 hits in about 10 and a half months, which stands as the fastest accumulation of a quintet of leaders in more than three decades and one of the most impressive of all time.

The last artist to score five No. 1 singles on the Hot 100 in under 10 and a half months was Michael Jackson, who landed just as many winners as BTS, but in a period that was about a month shorter. According to Billboard, the R&B/pop superstar pushed his smashes "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" with Siedah Garrett, "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror" and "Dirty Diana" to the summit on the competitive list between 1987 and 1988.

BTS nabbed their first No. 1 single on the Hot 100 last summer when their debut English song “Dynamite” opened in first place on the chart dated September 5. Before 2020 ended, they had accrued two more chart-toppers, as their own “Life Goes On” also kicked off its time on the ranking as high as a cut can climb, while their collaboration with Jason Derulo and Jawsh 685, "Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat),” shot to the peak rung after the K-pop powerhouses jumped on a remix.

They returned to the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 almost two months ago with their third instant ruler, “Butter,” which ran the show until this week, when it was replaced on the throne by “Permission to Dance.”
