There are many massively popular vocal bands in South Korea, and while beloved figures like NCT Dream, Seventeen, Exo and others routinely score massive sellers whenever they have a new project to deliver to their adoring fan bases, it appears that nobody can compete with BTS these days when it comes to breaking records. Now, the septet has a new CD for ARMYs (the name the septet’s followers have adopted) to buy, and it could very well be headed for the history books.
BTS recently re-released their new single “Butter” on CD, and it instantly became a bestseller. The track sold incredibly well when it was only offered as a digital download, but the boy group decided to do something special to make the release of the tune on a physical medium much more of an event. The CD single of “Butter” comes with not just that one track, but also new song “Permission to Dance,” which itself may become a huge chart success as well.
Followers of the biggest vocal act in the world rushed to pick up a copy of the “Butter” single album (a term used in a number of Asian markets to describe a release that is typically shorter than an EP and only features a very small number of songs), and in just the first day it was clear BTS had another winner on their hands.
After less than a full 24 hours of availability, the “Butter” CD had already sold more than one million copies. That’s more than many popular titles can sell in a week, even in a sales-focused market like South Korea.
The all-time record for the most copies sold of an album in South Korea in a week currently stands at 3.378 million, which BTS managed just last year with their full-length Map of the Soul: 7. While “Butter” likely didn’t sell nearly as well in the six days that followed its astounding debut, it wouldn’t be strange for it to end the tracking week with two million purchases, or perhaps more.
Will BTS break their own record? Hanteo, one of the two important music charts in South Korea, will announce its weekly numbers in the coming hours or possibly days, but at the moment, a new all-time best showing seems like a bit of a stretch, even for something that’s selling as well as “Butter” is. Instead, the title will likely settle for one of the top 10 biggest opening weeks, which is still quite the accomplishment, especially considering how many fans of the band already owned the song that was the focus of the release.
