Look Out For BTS’s New Song ‘Permission To Dance’ On The Charts - Forbes

BTS have a new song coming later this week, and while at first it looked like it might be a fun bonus for fans to enjoy and perhaps make a small impact on a handful of Billboard charts, now it appears the track could be on its way to becoming another major win for the South Korean vocal band.

Decades ago, before the introduction of iTunes, and certainly before streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music came along, singles were often released with more than one track. When you went to buy a single on CD or vinyl at the local record store, it typically came with at least two tunes, with the focus being the A-side and the other cut, usually added to make the purchase more worthwhile for fans, known as a B-side.

B-sides rarely received much attention, and the practice fell out of favor when music listeners migrated to buying or streaming just the one single they wanted. Now, BTS are not only reintroducing the idea of a B-side, but they could land a huge hit with what might be labeled a throwaway release for other acts.

Over a month after their latest single “Butter” dropped, the band is re-releasing the globe-dominating smash on CD. Thousands of fans will likely rush to purchase the product, and they’ll be treated to a new B-side called “Permission to Dance.” If the cut was only ever featured on the physical disc, it wouldn’t reach the masses...but now it’s been made clear that the Ed Sheeran-co-written track will also be uploaded to streaming platforms and digital download stores, and that immediately makes it a new tune to watch carefully.

Whether it’s promoted as a proper single or not, “Permission to Dance” is already headed for great things. Because it will be made widely available, millions of ARMYs (the name BTS fans have adopted for themselves) will rush to stream and buy the track, as they always do whenever the group has something new to share. More and more, it seems that almost everything the septet unleashes becomes a hit, and with all the hype surrounding the cut, there seems to be very little chance it won’t make a noticeable impact on the Billboard rankings after its first week has passed.

At the moment, it’s tough to predict just how well “Permission to Dance” will perform, but with what will surely be a healthy sales sum and streaming figures that will most likely make it one of the most popular new releases on the biggest sites, BTS will almost assuredly reach the Hot 100 once again, and a top 10 debut is not out of the question.

For almost any other act, a song like “Permission to Dance,” which was perhaps initially created to help sell more copies of “Butter,” might go unnoticed by many, and it may not have enjoyed its time to shine...but because this is BTS, nothing is missed, and everything is a big deal.
