Almost two months ago, NCT Dream released their highly-anticipated debut album Hot Sauce, and in no time, it became a historic win for the band. Now, they’ve re-released the set, and fans showed up in massive numbers yet again, proving that the South Korean boy group can sell music like few in today’s streaming-focused music industry.
On June 28, NCT Dream released the repackaged edition of Hot Sauce, which included three new tracks and which was renamed Hello Future. It’s common practice in the South Korean music business for top-tier musicians to capitalize on the popularity of recent EPs and albums by re-releasing them weeks or months later with new music attached. The addition of unheard songs usually convinces many fans to buy another copy...though the numbers connected to repackaged items aren’t usually as high as the first iterations.
According to Hanteo, an organization based in South Korea that compiles music charts and reports on the industry, Hello Future was not just welcomed warmly by those who love NCT Dream, it was a massive sales success. The 13-song set reportedly sold 527,758 copies in just the first day it was available. According to Hanteo, that’s the greatest one-day sales sum for any repackaged album in South Korean history. It also marks the first time in the country a repackaged set has sold half a million units in a single day.
As if that one record wasn’t enough, NCT Dream earns another spot in the history books now that Hello Future’s first full tracking frame has passed. In its initial seven days of availability, the title reportedly sold 681,316 copies. That’s not an all-time record, but it does make the project the repackaging with the second-largest sales week ever. According to Hanteo, the group comes in behind only BTS, whose Love Yourself: Answer apparently sold better in its first week several years ago.
NCT Dream has been one of the most popular groups in the South Korean music industry for some time now, but Hot Sauce took them to new heights. The album sold more than one million copies in its first week, and it easily debuted at No. 1 on the Gaon Albums chart, bringing them back to the summit. NCT Dream is a sub-unit of NCT, perhaps the most prolific brand in the K-pop field, as both the original act and the many sub-units (separate but connected music groups that feature only some members of the top band) have scored No. 1 titles and quite a few hit singles.
